Blog Tour Review - Of Blood and Fire by Ryan Cahill

Blog Tour Review - Of Blood and Fire by Ryan Cahill Born in fire. Tempered in blood. Epheria is a land divided by war and mistrust. The High Lords of the South squabble and fight, only kept in check by the Dragonguard, traitors of a time long past, who serve the empire of the North. In the remote villages of southern Epheria, still reeling from the tragic loss of his brother, Calen Bryer prepares for The Proving – a test of courage and skill that not all survive. But when three strangers arrive in the village of Milltown, with a secret they are willing to die for, Calen’s world is ripped from under him and he is thrust headfirst into a war that has been raging for centuries. There is no prophecy. His coming was not foretold. He bleeds like any man, and bleed he will. I loved Of Blood and Fire! It feels like a proper, old school fantasy. There are echoes of Tolkien here, as various races with long-seated antagonism towards each other have to come together to overthrow a great evil....

June Doughnut Review

 June Doughnut Review

In June I made two trips to Proven Goods in Hoult's Yard.

The first was with 🐰, and we got to sit outside in the sun eating our doughnuts for the first time.

They had a Summer Berry Fool. The doughnut itself was chewy and fluffy and the jam was really fruity and tart and incredibly moreish. They initially scored it a 4/5 but the more they ate it the better it got and they eventually settled on a 5/5.

I went for the Brown Butter Pecan & Caramel Cream. The flavour of this doughnut was subtle and delicious but what really made it was the textures, with the softness of the cream and the sponginess of the doughnut contrasting gorgeously with the crunch of the pecan pieces folded through it. A very interesting doughnut and definitely a 5/5.

I headed back on Fathers' Day with my kids (their first time at Proven Goods) and this time tried the Salted Caramel Cornflake Glaze. This is one I really liked the sound of on the menu but when I saw pictures of it I wasn't so sure. Nevertheless I gave it a try and I was quickly won over. The cornflake glaze gave it a lovely texture without being too spiky and the salted caramel glaze worked so well with it! Another 5/5!

My kids went for the classic 'Homer', a plain sugared doughnut and some mini 'Homers' and mini cinnamon ring doughnuts.

Sadly, 🐰 missed out on the Rhubarb & Strawberry Crumble in June, so lets hope that won makes a reappearance on the menu!

Looking ahead to July's menu, we're both excited to try the Hazelnut 'Bueno' Glaze.
