Blog Tour Review - Of Blood and Fire by Ryan Cahill

Blog Tour Review - Of Blood and Fire by Ryan Cahill Born in fire. Tempered in blood. Epheria is a land divided by war and mistrust. The High Lords of the South squabble and fight, only kept in check by the Dragonguard, traitors of a time long past, who serve the empire of the North. In the remote villages of southern Epheria, still reeling from the tragic loss of his brother, Calen Bryer prepares for The Proving – a test of courage and skill that not all survive. But when three strangers arrive in the village of Milltown, with a secret they are willing to die for, Calen’s world is ripped from under him and he is thrust headfirst into a war that has been raging for centuries. There is no prophecy. His coming was not foretold. He bleeds like any man, and bleed he will. I loved Of Blood and Fire! It feels like a proper, old school fantasy. There are echoes of Tolkien here, as various races with long-seated antagonism towards each other have to come together to overthrow a great evil....

July Doughnut Review (part one?)

 July Doughnut Review (part one?)

After excitedly browsing the new menu online, 🐰 and I headed down to Proven Goods in Hoult's Yard last Friday hoping to try the Hazelnut 'Bueno' glaze doughnut.

We got there fairly early but there was a reasonable queue. As we joined it, a new tray of the hazelnut Buenos glaze doughnuts was put in the window, but it was clearly a popular choice and they began disappearing immediately. We were starting to make back up choices just in case, as doughnut after doughnut disappeared before our eyes! Luckily, by the time we got to the counter there were just two left, and they were ours!

First thing, they've introduced new doughnut trays that are a fantastic addition. The boxes are grand if you're getting a lot of doughnuts but putting one of these in a paper bag would have ruined it. The trays work perfectly.

The Hazelnut 'Bueno' Glaze is definitely the messiest doughnut I've had from Proven Goods. The glaze is soft and sticky and ended up across a lot of my face.

It tasted great though, with the dark chocolate cutting through the sweetness of the white chocolate fairly effectively, though it was still incredibly sweet. The hazelnuts added a nice flavour, but after last month's strongly textural treats, there was a disappointing lack of crunch to them. The doughnut was delightfully soft but the nuts just didn't add enough of a contrast to place this one in my top list.

I gave it 4/5, while 🐰 gave it 3.5/5
